RESEARCH CONDUCTED WITH HUMAN SUBJECTS
In accordance with the ethical and legal norms applicable to scientific research in Brazil, we would like to clarify some important points regarding the submission of articles involving research with human subjects.
According to National Health Council Resolution CNS 466/12, all research involving human subjects must be previously approved by a Research Ethics Committee (CEP). This resolution establishes the mandatory nature of ethical approval before the start of the research, but does not require the journal to request proof of CEP approval after the research has been conducted. That is, the ethical assessment must occur before the execution of the research, and verification of this approval is not necessary at the time of article submission to the journal.
Examples of research that must be submitted to the Ethics Committee include, but are not limited to:
- Clinical studies involving patients or volunteers, such as clinical trials of drugs or medical treatments.
- Research involving the collection of sensitive data, such as personal or genetic information, with the direct participation of individuals.
- Observational research in environments such as hospitals, clinics, and schools, which involves direct interaction with human participants.
On the other hand, there are exceptions where research may not require approval from the Ethics Committee, for example:
- Research with public or anonymous data, such as studies of large databases or research that does not involve the collection of personal data.
- Observational or literature review research, where there is no direct interaction with participants and the data analyzed are public or in the public domain.
- Public opinion research, where there is no significant risk of privacy invasion and the data are not sensitive.
It is important to emphasize that the responsibility for the ethical conduct of the research and for obtaining the appropriate CEP approval lies entirely with the authors and the Institutions responsible for the research. Authors must ensure that all ethical, legal, and regulatory requirements have been met during the research, as established by Resolution CNS 466/12.
Additionally, according to the editorial norms of the Scientific Society Journal, all authors must submit conflict of interest and contribution declaration letters, for publication and maintenance thereof, required for all accepted submissions and requested after editorial evaluation. This letter must disclose any affiliation or potential conflict that could influence the results or interpretation of the presented data.
